Trays were moved, photographed, processed, and replaced by Jake Heare and L. Christine Savolainen.
Processing worked as follows. 1 tray per person was moved to a dry area on top of a bucket. The trays were opened and 1 windscreen bag as collected from the tray. This bag was then opened and all the live oysters were counted while the deads were collected for later counting. This allows the live dead count process to be sped up but only 1/4th of all the live samples in each tray were counted. Deads were then collected from the remaining 3 windscreen bags in the tray. Predators were quickly counted and removed. Due to the extremely high mortality rate, live samples were not collected until the night of the 19th to calculate how many live samples were needed. The final number was 16 per tray though mortalities were found in the samples and thus caused use to have too low sample counts.
Field Notes as Transcribed from notebook:
Observation: Windscreen bags w/ heavy siltation and mud appeared to have fewer flatworms and fewer morts. Clean clear bags appeared to have higher # of flatworms and more morts. This was not necessarily the case for all bags. Amount of siltation in bags may have changed during washing
cleaning of trays prior to openning [sic] (to prep tiles for photos), however this is doubtful. CS
The trays were covered in hermit crabs, shrimp, gunnels, crabs, and drills. This was mirrored on the interior of the trays which also had excessively high predator counts and mortalities. The tables below show the 25% live counts but are missing the dead, total, and missing counts which will need to be filled in with mortality data. The total for each population is based on the calculation of adding the 25% counts together and then multiplying times 4 to get the final total. This total mirrors findings from early mortality data and will be adjusted as needed when more data is available. There were also numerous drills and shrimp, so many that counting could not be done fast enough to be the incoming tide. Instead we estimated 10 for each tray that had many specimets and 20 for trays that had incredibly high amounts of specimens.
